Medieval Mersey Traders
Over Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd of August Norton Priory celebrates its 5th annual festival of medieval lifestyle through their Medieval Mersey Traders event.
One of the top 4 Tourism Experiences in 2008 as judged by The Mersey Partnership (TMP) this event offers a truly special opportunity to engage with the medieval way of life. Everyone will enjoy the experience no matter what age or interest. Described by TMP as “an outstanding tourism experience” and “something special”, this event offers exceptional standards which “not only attracts tourists but also helps local residents to rediscover their region.”
A superb 15th century living history encampment demonstrates crafts and skills used at Norton Priory as seen through the objects recovered from the archaeological excavation of the site.
This year the event will celebrate the medieval Lammas festival or “loaf mass” with special breads and menus in the Refectory café, a parade by the group to mark the important harvest season.
See a higgler, herbalist, candle dipper, black smith, cook and carpenter among the group who have travelled to Norton and set up camp. Watch whilst they use the resources of woodland around them in their everyday lives.
Visitors can then wander the Museum galleries to see the original objects on display and enjoy a stroll through the woodlands to see the variety of trees, plants and herbs once used in the medieval buildings and as medicines and food.
A colourful, fun and amazingly engaging event. Described by one visitor last year as “a really enjoyable day out. We hadn’t been before but were really surprised. Lots of interactive stuff especially for children which was great. Will definitely be back”
