Community Focus

The outreach programme works with groups of people within the local community supporting them to feel more involved in their local history and more comfortable with visiting the museum. This is done through working on joint projects, running activity sessions both onsite and offsite, attending local events, and providing tours and facilities for visitors.

We target groups who do not currently visit the museum such as older people in residential care, local families with pre-school children, young people outside formal education and people with disabilities. In the past three years, we have worked with over 5000 people, providing one off opportunities and through developing in-depth relationships with some groups.

Story sacks project – Halton Sure Start groups
We worked with parents and children to make a set of Story Sacks which can be used by all families visiting the Priory. Stories about Norton Priory were written by our volunteers, these were illustrated by Riverside College students, and then we created and piloted games and toys with local families.

Visit in a Box - Halton Age Concern
Groups of older people from Windmill Hill were involved in piloting and developing themed activities and resources, to be used by groups of older people visiting the museum.

Events & Workshops
We regularly take part in local events aimed at to building community relations and providing activities for families. At 'Castlefields Party in the Park' we ran activities making soft toy fish inspired by our magnificent St Christopher statue, and creating coins and pilgrim badges from foil.
