Summer of Stories
Published: 26/05/2025
Norton Priory Museum and Gardens is celebrating the Summer of 2025 with an array of exciting, new events and activities all based around different stories, both fictional and non-fictional.
Norton Priory has some surprising literary connections! Did you know that the medieval giant Saint Christopher statue was the inspiration for the author Lucy M Boston. She wrote the book ‘The Children of Green Knowe’ in which the Saint Christopher statue comes to life. This fantasy sequence featuring the statue appears in the film ‘From Time to Time’ based on the Green Knowe stories by Julian Fellows and starring Dame Maggie Smith.
During the summer we will be showcasing some very special objects kindly on loan from Lucy Boston’s family to celebrate how museum objects can be a huge source of inspiration.
From storytelling events to theatre productions, stories of all types will feature throughout the year.
Other literary masterpieces such as theatre productions of The Wind in the Willows, Pride and Prejudice and The Tempest will use the glorious outdoor spaces at Norton Priory for their backdrops.
‘Stories from the Soil’ will shed light on stories that you might not expect to hear, such as recollections from Dr Patrick Greene OBE of his days excavating at Norton Priory during the 1970s and 1980s. A trail around the gallery will reveal the intriguing and unexpected stories objects can tell on closer inspection, such as the Japanese fairytale hidden in some eighteenth century pottery or a type of medieval bottle used to protect against witches.
